  • How the game works: 7 players per team, 4 quarters, non-stop treading water!
  • Positions: Goalkeeper, defenders, attackers, and center forward.
  • Basic rules: No touching the bottom, one hand on the ball (except goalies), and shot clocks.

  • Most schools hold tryouts before the season—be ready to showcase swimming speed, endurance, and ball-handling.
  • No experience? No problem! Many players start in high school and improve quickly.

  • Expect intense workouts: Swimming sprints, eggbeater treading, and strength training.
  • Drills include passing accuracy, shooting power, and defensive positioning.
  • A mix of endurance, agility, and water awareness is key to success.

  • Essentials: Water polo suit (tighter fit), caps with ear guards, and a high-quality ball.
  • Team gear may include warm-ups, bags, and practice suits.
  • Goggles are NOT used—get used to opening your eyes underwater!

  • Offense: Drives, picks, perimeter shooting, and quick passes.
  • Defense: Press defense, zone coverage, and shot blocking.
  • Communication and teamwork are crucial—knowing when to pass, call for the ball, or set up plays.

  • High school leagues are competitive, with regional and state championships.
  • Players can get noticed by college recruiters—playing club water polo can boost chances.
  • Water polo scholarships exist, especially at NCAA Division I & II schools.
